The Future of Adult Learning an interview with Founder Matt Milligan
Miron BykovLondon - 25/11/2019
Today we spoke to Matt Milligan, co-founder of Uhubs.
Uhubs, co-founded by Matt Milligan in 2018, helps Entrepreneurs & Modern Professionals grow and find purpose in their careers by developing new skills through tailored, in-person workshops & online content from World Class Experts.
Tell me about the day the idea was born. Where the best ideas are born – on the beach of Bali. Having been through the ‘traditional’ transition from University to the Corporate world I experienced a radical evolution in the skills needed for the world of work. It became apparent that I needed to learn new skills quickly to future-proof my career and the current alternatives did not enable me to measure my progress or gain the skills I needed fast enough. It appears I was not alone in feeling the pressure to adapt to change as Millennials’ time spent in jobs is 76% shorter than previous generations and AI continues to redefine the world of work as we know it.
What was the biggest turning point in the life of Uhubs? It was a couple of months after the idea was born, at the time I worked at a consulting firm and managed to get hold of some empty meeting rooms. This then enabledus to run two pilot sessions. We sent out 50 invitations to people we didn’t know and 48 accepted, this was early validation for us that people were interested in our service without us having to spend a penny on the business.
Three top tips for aspiring entrepreneurs:
Test your idea before building anything.
Choose your Co-founder wisely, make sure it’s a person you trust, it really is a marriage.
Be lean. Enjoy being scrappy, cut down your spending and bring back the hustle mentality
What gets you out of bed every morning? The opportunity to help people achieve personal fulfilment and goals. The most satisfying moments for me are witnessing the personal growth of our Uhubs Members.
What did you want to be when you were little? A doctor -> Sportsman -> Entrepreneur
Favourite Disney character: This question takes some thought. Woody (Toy Story) would be my favourite.
What is Uhubs planning for the world next? Eventually we can eliminate the need for expensive, time-consuming training and give flexible access to professional skills for everyone; be it for CPD, self-directed learning or taking the next step in your career. And that is a vision we believe is worth fighting for.
